The Free-range Flock   (Special Assortment)

by Jennifer Floyd

Variegated speckled chocolate
mocha creamy pale tan
chalky bone white
tinted stone white
olive green and viridian.

Eggs I gather from the nest box,
under bushes, inside stalls,
laid by tall hens,
laid by small hens,
with happy clucks and raucous squalls.

Spangled, splashed, and penciled pullets
fowls crested, frilled, and muffed,
fuzzy little
five-toed Silkies,
shiny roosters, spurred and ruffed.

Some with beards, or barred and booted,
chickens fair, and chickens plain,
some are friendly,
others flighty,
searchers for sprouts, bugs, and grain.
